General description of the collection: The Frank B. Clay photograph collection consists of photos of certain significant segments of General Clay's career. The collection is made up entirely of albums. The first of which covers his service with the 1st Armored Division and the 13th Tank Battalion in Tunisia and Italy from 1943 to 1945. The next two albums deal with the 57th Tank Battalion, 2nd Armored Division, in Germany from 1952 to 1955. An oversized album covers Lieutenant Colonel Clay's service with the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) in Vietnam in 1951 and 1962. Three albums cover his tenure as Assistant Division Commander of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. Another album covers his assignment as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel for the U.S. MACV. The last album contains photos and autographs of visitors to the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth in 1970.

Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat.
